I'll update this review once I use this book for class and can comment on the contents. However, even if the book's contents are perfect, the highest rating I'll give it is a 3.In the meantime, I'm so deeply appalled at how flimsy this disgustingly expensive $140+ paper-back "book" is that it warrants immediate complaint! The pages are large and very thin. The cover stock is not firm either. This combination results in a book that does not maintain it's shape and can be easily bent and folded. There is already a crease in my book and significant wrapping on one of the corners. This is how I received it brand-new and perhaps the damage occurred during shipping (it wasn't packed tightly at all, and could move around in the box). I can only imagine what it will look like after some use. This is very disappointing. I've bought many other paper back books for college courses and they have all been A) cheaper, and B) not anywhere as flimsy as this one. The publishers of this book should be a shamed at the quality of their book construction. C'mon -- for $140+ give me a proper hardcover!

Couldn't get MasteringAstronomy to work. Rental books don't work in your Major when you need to review material from four years of classes to graduate. To have a textbook ONLY available as a rental makes it impossible to use for a class in your major and is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of.

Great! Needed this book for a summer class in Astronomy. At my school, the class is in the Physics department. I was super nervous to take the class as I don't do well in mathematics, but this book made the course easier to understand and grasp! Great diagrams and examples inside! I had taken an Astronomy class in the past- well, the same class- and didn't get the grade I needed for my program. That book wasn’t as helpful as this one due to the fact it talked more in the physics department than in the descriptive astronomy for beginners. I prefer this book and will be keeping it for future use in my future career.

My professor for AST1002 recommended the 8th edition of this text but it was significantly more expensive, so me being super cheap, I rented this edition. If you prefer reading the textbook instead of going to lectures, this text is sufficient. Chapters are not very lengthy and I found the review sections at the end of each one to be quite helpful. I read the assigned chapters the night before the respective exams and got an A on all of them as well as in the course.

For anyone wanting an astronomy textbook for their library, why would you consider a rental situation such as Astronomy Today? Or the extraordinarily high price for a version of the book you can actually own. I have given up on Astronomy Today, even though I have the past 3 editions. The Cosmic Perspective, 8th edition, by Jeffery Bennett, Megan Donahue, Nicholas Schneider and Mark Voit is an excellent astronomy textbook that I recently purchased and it is a great alternative to Astronomy Today.

This was my textbook for an astronomy class. The multitude of color pictures was definitely captivating. Sometimes I found the text to lack in detail, but I suppose that is to be expected for an introductory course. Overall, the professor made a very good choice when choosing this book.

Great book. Covers all areas of astronmomy and is written in an easy to follow manner. Good illustrations and diagrams to explain concepts. The Mastering Astronomy website access that comes with it is awesome. Lots of interactive diagrams to further explain concepts. Cool videos for some topics as well. I liked the NASA video of dropping a feather and a brick on the Moon to see that they do both fall at the same rate when there is no atmosphere, confirming Newton's Laws. Good site to practice tests as well.I have this book as a textbook for intro astronomy, but it would be good for anyone wanting an up-to-date book on this topic.

For required college reading, this was one of the best science text books I've ever had. The content was easy to understand for the most part, and flowed well from chapter to chapter. It was written in 2013, so it does need updating due to all the events that occurred just the summer of 2015 alone (i.e. Pluto flyby). Otherwise, great astronomy text book!
